SimHQ Review 9/10

Fred “HeinKill” Williams from SimHQ has reviewed Atlantic Fleet and took some time to interview Nils Duecker, the lead artist for the game.

Atlantic Fleet scored a 9/10 and Fred had the following to say:
“This impressive game costs about the same as a fast food meal, but offers you a three course dinner you won’t tire of.”
“And honestly, I am simply gobsmacked that this level of detail is even included in a 10 USD iOS title.”

Oh, and Killerfish Games: please please please give AI captains of damaged submarines some balls! If they engage a ship, they just run away, even if the sub has taken no damage, so to speak, perhaps a single 4.7in hit or less. How does this make your sub unable to engage ships? To make matters worse, they aren’t repaired, so they cruise around sinking merchants while being practically invincible! Please do something about this before I strangle Karl Donitz myself…

Killerfish Games, I read this review, and it says you’re making a new naval real-time strategy game? Is it gonna have Cold War, and modern ships, or will it still be historical?

I too read the review and it says you are working on a real time strategy game now. Please don’t give up completely on turn-based strategy games. This is a major differentiator of your previous two games. For me Pacific & Atlantic Fleets together with Sid Meyer’s WWI and WW2 planes games for iOS were the best true strategy games mainly due to turn based philosophy that was excellently implemented within the scope of each game.
Having said that after playing your two previous games I will buy anything you produce in the future.

We agree! Real time does not mean real time strategy though. It just means it will play like a full simulation, similar to the Silent Hunter series.

You also did an amazing job at Atlantic Fleet. It is a lot better than Battle Fleet 2, the only advantage that Battle Fleet 2 has over you is online multiplayer. This is the best naval game on mobile. I hope you will do even better with your next game.

I hope there will be online multiplayer in your next game.

    • Killerfish Games

Thanks! Multiplayer would be a great feature but we tend to focus on rich, detailed games and the pacing of them is not always conducive to multiplayer.
It is also a lower priority since there are so many multiplayer naval games already out there, but at the end of the day there’s no denying it would be an awesome feature to have…

Two points: Firstly, IK didn’t think the AI was supposed to use unlockables – one night in late-1942, Exeter’s cruiser division ran straight into German battleship Hutten! I’ve unlocked but not purchased Lion and so I was understandably perplexed as to how it arrived.
Secondly, my squadron (CA Exeter and CL Achilles) managed to sink Hutten in short order. Exeter, which started off on medium damage, got put on heavy damage whilst Achilles failed to take a hit purely because I aimed for the BB, laid smoke, and charged. When I got to a range of 5,000 yards, I turned and fired torpedoes, four altogether due to low ammunition. Exeter’s one missed but Achilles landed three hits – and blew the main magazine. I was on the easiest difficulty, fair enough, but should three torpedoes really sink the largest battleship in commission in the game?

And I’ve just discovered an absolutely intriguing glitch. In the North Sea, destroyers Jackal and Vanity were attacked by Do217 torpedo planes. I evaded the first torpedo and the second aircraft, attacking Jackal, had to abort its run to avoid crashing into Vanity. It curved away like normal. However, when it finished curving away and despawned, the torpedo was left floating and gradually began to fall, perhaps at the same rate as depth charges. Over the next few turns, it fell into the water when, upon hitting the water, it splashed in and continued running like a normal torpedo! What the hell?

Killerfish I found two bugs while I was playing: 1.the escort carrier Barnes when it launches an attack sometimes there was a big splash and it was basically plane crash into the water move. 2. In the same round one of the bogue class escort carriers launched an attack but while the plane was approaching Bismarcks flak started shooting but I couldn’t see it but could still hear and the invisible flak shot down the plane

    Reply
    • Killerfish Games

Were you playing the Barnes or the AI? Did this happen early, or after you had launched several flights of torpedo bombers? There is a bug where >12 (or 16??) aerial torpedoes causes a bug. Fixed in next update.

Would it also be possible to add the destruction of propulsion systems? I think this should happen because smaller warships, such as destroyers and light cruisers, shouldn’t be able to repair damage to their engines after being torpedoed or hit by large calibre artillery. I also think that Bismarck found to her cost the rudders simply can’t be repaired whilst at sea!

Killerfishgames I find the carrier top priority thing is unrealistic and breaks the game because

1.the germans saw battleships as higher priority it was in the Pacific that they realised carriers were the most important assets
2.If a battleships hits a carrier deck it disables the carrier instantly making carriers just there for show
3.the crew of the bismarck prioritised sinking older battleships first

also the germans had pre dreadnoughts in WW2

    Reply
    • DigestedSine561

      1. I do find that surface ships and submarines should perhaps be a priority; check the lists above that I’ve made to show all of the vessels I’d like to see in the game.
      2. That is irritating, but on the other hand if you only encounter a destroyer squadron, say three DDs and a CL, you can decimate them with bombs and fish before they get close enough to knock out your deck. And even if they damage it, you have up to four turns to finish them off before you run out of attack capabilities… and then you get to escorts – a handy smoke screen and a decoy, a CA or a BB, can divert enemy fire enabling the carrier to run.
      3. Perhaps so… and look where it bloody got them.
      4. If the High Seas Fleet commanders nicknamed the pre-dreadnoughts at Jutland “five-second ships” as that’s how long they were expected to last under fire from the Grand Fleet, how long do you think it would take for Holstein to sink against a ship like Nelson? No, they are coastal battleships and bombardment ships only, and so until land bombardment comes in, it is pointless including such ships.

Killerfish games, can we please have two things for the dynamic campaign either in this game or in the next:
The option to toggle 20 or 40 ships in your navy. If this makes it too easy to get unlocks, disable unlocks for the 40 ship navy. I think that this would greatly enhance the ‘fleet at your fingertips’ feeling that the dynamic campaign gives you and I guess is supposed to give you.
The option to toggle preset ships or a stash of renown. Whilst I appreciate your selection of ships, I find that it may be nice to start with slightly better ships, or at least variants in the class (for example, I hate the name ‘Vanoc’ and would much rather have a ship such as Vendetta but I don’t want to pettily waste renown).
    Please consider these things,

Just something worth noting-The American ships had highly developed radar aimed fire control and therefor is US battleships are added they should have radar instead of rangefinders-the South Dakota also was heavily damaged by the krishima because the shockwaves of the 16inch guns caused major power failure. Then USS Washington appeared and sunk krishima with accurate radar aimed fire.

AND best of all South Dakota went to the North Atlantic in 1943
Washington went on the 26 March 1942

Nuclear moose, Japanese submarines might be a good idea. If they are added, I would want the Sentaka-ko, I-201 (Sentaka(Dai) class, Sentoku type (a submarine aircraft carrier) with three Aichi M6A, so Axis can launch fighters. They have many more submarine types.

If Montana is added, should Yamato be added to the game for Axis? Also, what about Italy’s Littorio-class battleship?

    Reply
    • DigestedSine561

You’d need type B-1 and Type J-3 really… and Yamato should keep out of it because it stayed in the Pacific whereas it’s highly likely at least one of the Montanas would have been on convoy escort duties.

I think those are great ideas but i would also want more carriers like Hms,ark royal ,eagle, Hermes, and ranger. And if their next game is pacific fleet 2 do you think U-Boats and Armed Merchant Crusiers would be appropriate?

I’ve just re-read the article – please no real-time! Your turn-based games are almost impeccable but no-one can make a good real-time game on a phone – the controls always get in your way and, with the functions of Atlantic Fleet, it would be damn-near impossible to make it good. It won’t end up as good as Atlantic Fleet is, I’m warning you now.

    Reply
    • gm11

A real-time game? It’s possible on mobile, and mobile devices are already getting more powerful. Battlestations Pacific was a real time strategy game, and it got it right. Also, Wolves of the Atlantic is real time. There’s a possibility that real time naval warfare could work on mobile.

      Reply
      • DigestedSine561

The Battlestations series are both very good games – but they’re not mobile. I’m just worried that to, for example, to have directional and weaponry controls the same as Atlantic Fleet, you’d either have overlapping controls or they’d have to be moved which would obscure the screen. Battlestations: Midway and Battlestations: Pacific only work because on consoles and computers there is plenty of space for different commands – an entire controller or keyboard and mouse to give commands instead of a tiny screen which needs to display what’s happening AS WELL.

        Reply
          • DigestedSine561

See, iPad only! That’s because real-time games don’t work on smaller devices such as phones or my iPod Touch!

          • DigestedSine561

And I also hate to point it out, but from the trailer and pictures on their website the graphics look cr*p and the gameplay looks a tad boring. I’m very picky in what I want in a game and Atlantic Fleet seems to – pretty much – have it all, bar a few more vessels and a few little bugs. Now, I’m not denying that an RTS won’t work, I’m just saying it’ll be harder for it to work than a turn-based game. I think that, in my opinion, Killerfish games’ best bet for a new game is to remain turn-based as we know that’s popular and works well and to revisit the Pacific because, whilst it was a good game at the time, Pacific Fleet is overshadowed by Atlantic Fleet and doesn’t really do justice to the theatre nicknamed the Naval War without things such as damaged components, smoke and more than 14 warships.

          • gm11

Victory at Sea is very demanding. It only works on 64-bit devices.

          • gm11

    Bugs/Issues
Pinguin class merchant raiders obtain damage efgects to their C turret despite the fact it remains operational.

I found that on rare occasions, I get aircraft that drop double their normal payload (16 rockets on Liberators, 6 bombs on Swordfish, etc.).

If you stop a Lion class battleship, you will clearly see that a section of its hull forword of the rudder is missing. It isn’t good if you can see the machinery.

    Questions
Are hedgehog suppose to be able to damage/sink surface ships? I found that they can. I tested it on Scharnhorst and sank it with a hedgehog equipped destroyer in custom battle.

Do aircraft do damage if they collide with a ship similar to Pacific Fleet? In other words, if I shot down a Condor, and it hit an Illustrious class aircraft carrier, would the ship take damage?

Do secondary guns and torpedoes ever get knocked out or do they just experience damage that renders them unusable for X amount of turns?

And if they take a new naval game that I hope they do it as fleet pacific that actually tastes better it is American and kosher boats ose, it’s pacific fleet, but with graphics of fleet atlantic and put more ships by the real Japanese imperial army had many more ships like the Fuso Nagato kirishima Shukaku and many others instead give us one of each kind and not all classes are in the United States lack the mountain class, North Carolina, Arizona and here it is the only battleship iowa.
And I think I speak not only I think many have seen those aspects that have to improve is not a bad review are just things that I would like that would improve and not say what I say tomorrow to do so in a while. If you read Thanks and keep it up.

Pick Bismarck, Tirpitz and Scharnhorst and keep restarting until you cross their T. Ignore your weapons officer’s recommendations and use your own judgement to fire. Destroy enemy main batteries and immobilise the battleships. DO NOT SINK THEM or when two go
Under the other two lay smoke. Keep your eye on the DDs and only hit them when they try to torpedo you. After all four BBs are disabled, sink any remaining DDs and close in for the kill, using Scharnhorst’s torpedoes to good effect.

Nuclear moose, you need to buy P-40 with gold, and fully upgraded first before you can get P-39. Also, you will need F4F that is upgraded before you get F6F.

Also, that trick to earn gold without spending money does not work anymore, since 0.4.0.

I also found out that Philip has over 100000 gold in his account, through the new gameplay videos.

Also, has anybody tried sinking the Lion class battleship, or H-class battleship using less powerful ships? I’ve been able to sink Lion with a pocket battleship, and Scharnhorst.

What I also find that it is really challenging to destroy a Lion with an Admiral Hipper-class heavy cruiser.

No. Ship classes are based on lead ship or most numerous. Unfortunately we can’t model individual variants within a class.

Gm11 if you like shocking history facts I have one for you: Planned Imperial German Invasion of the United States 2 decades before ww1. Recently discovered in 2002. The reason? Germany is jealous of Britain,France, and America of its success in economic trade. How Germany plans to earn itself a spot in shipping: Not quonquer the U.S but force it into negotiation and drastically reduce its success in economic trade. There were three plans.

1.plan 1. Send a massive fleet of ships, engage the U.S Navy in battle, defeat the U.S Navy, and bombard Norfolk Naval yard and other important sites

    2. Plan 2. Send a large fleet of transports and escorts (about 40-60 ships). Land troops at sandy hook,New Jersey and shell New York City to terrorize civilians and land at Cape Cod,Massachusetts and shell Boston with the same intentions as newyork and force the U.S to the negotiating table.

3.Plan 3. I have trouble understanding this one sorry.

Why it wouldn’t work: Germany simply didn’t have enough ships, men, and resources thank goodness and plus after the Spanish-American war the U.S Navy was built up and pumped up for battle

Hey gm11 can you find any records of the corsair and hellcat over Europe? What roles they played,if they scored and air to air kills or if any of them were captured

      Reply
      • gm11

The RN FAA received its first Corsairs in November 1943. The Corsair was used in an attack on the Tirpitz, on April 3, 1944. Also, the British were the ones that were able to land the F4U on carriers, so that’s how the USN approved the F4U for carrier service.

The Hellcat was used by the Royal Navy, in Europe, and the Medditeranean theatre.

I also read that the hellcat was used in operation dragoon (which they need to teach us about in history). The invasion of southern France. I read they were very successful in ground attack and air to air combat. Did the corsair get any kills? (The part about the British showing the Americans that the corsair could be landed on a carrier was fascinating) and were any corsairs or hellcats captured by the Germans?

          • gm11

The Corsair has no kills. The Germans may have also captured 1, or 2 Corsairs. The Japanese captured 2. There was an F4U in the Kasumigaura flight school. There is even a photograph of the Japanese Corsair.

Killerfish games, check the line-up for the Ile de Batz – it appears to be not only the same Les Sept Iles but fails to use T-24 and T-29 which appear in the overview.

What are some strange history facts you know? I’ll start off

The dog that passed his owner in rank. Sargent Stubby was a dog that was smuggled over seas by his owner Robert J.Conroy. When Stubby got over to France he was found out but when Stubby sensed trouble, he saluted his commander impressing him and allowing him to stay. Stubby went on to be very useful to the 102nd division. Whimpering to alert the division of a mustard gas attack, barking to alert incoming shells because he could hear them before humans, helping locate wounded soldiers, bringing comfort to the wounded and well soldiers, and even capturing a German spy! He won 10 medals and became a Sargent in world war one

More on dogs, the captain of US fleet carrier Lexington had a spaniel (I think he was called Wags) who was not only present at the carrier’s destruction in the Coral Sea but survived to
tell the tail! (sorry for the pun)

More on animals: There was a cat that survived the sinking of 3 ships! Her name was Unsinkable Sam she was onboard the Kms Bismarck, Hms Cossack, and Hms Ark Royal. A commander said “He was angry but quite unharmed. I would be mad to if my mouse hunting was interrupted by a torpedo to!”
