Yes. There is now an Option to turn on “Manual Zoom Buttons” which displays 2 new buttons to tap in order to zoom in and out.
Also useful for Apple TV and other devices that do not have the pinch functionality.

What about Graf-Zeppelin? Germany still can’t use airstrikes in simplified campaign. Would the Essex-class, or Yorktown also be considered?

Land-based attacks have been fixed for both Campaign and BotA games making them available, including the powerful German glide bombs.
Essex/Yorktown would have to be researched to see if they operated in the Atlantic.

USS Yorktown (CV-5) served in the Atlantic. USS Ranger (CV-4) served in the USN Atlantic Fleet, and USS Wasp (CV-7) served in the Atlantic, before being transferred to the Pacific.

No use of Essex class on the Atlantic during WW2, they did see service in Atlantic, but that was only postwar.

Yes. Barracudas are available by default on CV carriers in Custom Battles. In BotA, CVs get Swordfish, then Barracudas if purchased (or refitted) after Jan ’43.
Barracudas were too big to be launched from CVEs.

Amazing! I can’t wait for the update! Maybe in a future update, please add the snorkel system to the Type IXX, which allowed it to go at 17.2 knots on diesel engines under water and 6.1 knots with silent motors, and make this an option at periscope depth , except that it would be easier for destroyers to detect you. Also please add a way to compensate wind for level bombers, as almost all bombs dropped miss or near miss.

    Reply
    • Killerfish Games

Type XXI already does 17.2 knots when submerged.
Best way to handle wind is to always attack into the wind (if it is moderately strong or greater) and drop a little later. That way bombs won’t drift off to the side of the target.

Great! Also thanks for the advice. Just as a suggestion but can you out in some U.S. submarines in a future update? Also the Fritz X missiles are way too hard to aim. Possibly maybe a bombsight? Also could a view from a the deck or bridge be possible? This will definitely make this an amazing game.

Type XXI becomes available earlier than historically: Sept 1943. Bit of an alternate history there, but then so is Germany wining the BotA 🙂

Emailed support about this back in June. It’s actually an little stranger than just having double the amount in torpedoes than should. It’s the B class destroyers. In the shipyards the ship information states 8 torpedoes as you would expect, though the ship information during battle states 16. What is stranger though is that the first 8 torpedoes act as expected, they move an short distance when fired and then move in the “torpedoes in the water” phases, the latter 8 though move the short distance when fired but then remain static in the water and no “torpedoes in the water” phase is provided with these.

          According to “Paul” in his response to me back in June;

          “Good find!
          B class destroyer bug:
Fixed it for the 1.09 update.
Also looked over all other ships and didn’t find this problem with any others, so hopefully B Class was the only one.

I still would like the H-42 battleship sometime later if the Montanas are put into game we need something like this and you might pull people to this game more than world of warships. Plus with the H-39 already in game basically same ship just heavier main armament if I am not wrong. not asking for any bigger ship cause wouldn’t be as playable with what allies have at this time.

    Reply
    • gm11

H-42 may be too heavy compared to Montana (90000 tons vs. 65000 tons). H-41 (68000 tons) would be more preferential for the game.

Best update so far! Following spike’s earlier comment, it would totally be awesome to be able to sink the entire enemy fleet in BotA. I actually took the time to make an Excel sheet that lists all the ships on both sides. Nothing is more satisfying than finishing a skirmish in BotA and crossing off 2 BBs, a CA, and a bunch of DDs.
Being the OCD gamer that I am, having a fleet elimination option would make Atlantic fleet damn near perfection (pretty close as is).

I’d like to see the South Dakota, and Iowa classes eventually.

South Dakota should cost 90,000-100,000 renown, because of better armor. They were possibly the best battleships that were constructed under the naval treaty, with a 35,000-ton limitation.

Iowa should cost 100,000 or more, because of the additional speed advantage.

The Montana-class should cost a bit more than H-39, because it had more firepower.

    • MattF4U-4

Are you seriously asking for Iowa?!?!?

South Dakota would be alright because Alabama and Aonther one saw some combat in 43,BUT THE IOWA?!,That only was there for a short time ,no combat in the Atlantic at all,And it was only Iowa, The most important thing Iowa did in the Atlantic was transport the president,That’s it…

Also south Dakota should be cheaper seeing as it costs less to build then North Carolina

Iowa would be good but it would break the game
Iowas would be on par with even H class
        Belt armour-H-class
        Turrents-Iowa(19″)
        Deck-Iowa
        Guns-Iowa
Fire control-(got no Idea about H class but if it was like bismarck’s fire control then Iowa gets this one)
        secondary guns-Probably Iowa’s 20 5 Inch guns rather than H-class’s 12 5.9 Inch guns

        Therefore
        Best Armour belongs to Iowa
        Most Firepower belongs to Iowa

Therefore maybe Iowas should just be an extra dowloadable ship to the game

Just saw the update arrive at 2AM this morning and downloaded straight away, been impatient with apple getting this reviewed too heh.

First impressions are good as I see that the C class destroyers now are using their RCN names. B class destroyer torpedo bug is gone. I saw that there no longer exists the toggle in options between 5,000 and 25,000 yards, although at least seems that this is now forced to 25,000 yards so that’s alright. I also see that the Revenge class are now the cheapest battleships at 48,000 renown which is good as they were previously not worth purchasing when they were more expensive and weaker than an QE. Choosing starting fleet and their starting ports is great.

    As always Killerfish fantastic support.

2 things : why did you Killerfish lowered the “life” of the ships ?? I just tried the mission 49 of allied campaign and all my ships were sunk with 6-7 shells from bismarck on each of my ships only !! It was good when we had to shoot many shells to the target it was more realistic !
And second : now wherever I shoot the shells the ship sunk I mean I sunk the Bismarck by hitting his bridge and NO shells on his hull ( The submerged hull in red ) that is strange not like before why did you change that ? It was really good according to me the fact that we had to aim the hull to sink a ship faster

Probably improvements to the damage model. The reason why the sinks could sink quickly is because of magazine explosions.

I tested North Carolina and Washington against Bismarck and Tirpitz. The first battle resulted in Washington being destroyed by a magazine explosion, but I soldiered on with North Carolina, eventually destroying the frontal guns of Bismarck and Tirpitz, at the cost of a North Carolina with a destroyed superstructure, and destruction of her 1st fore turret. Sadly, my device died, so I couldn’t finish the battle.

Didn’t like my second try. Got frustrated trying to hit them, so I quit.

Third try resulted in Bismarck and Tirpitz sinking together, with one having a magazine explosion, and the other one exploded a few seconds later, just as I was about to aim the 16″ guns at it.

I disagree It depends on how you use the ships when I play the only threat to north Carolina and Washington are the new submarines and and the H class when the formation is The carrier (CV Illustrious) not being the tip of the spear My North Carolina , Washington and Illustrious formation got me 3 stars in all scenarios the damage model allows you to hit the back of bismarck to obtain a magazine explosion mid-ship(???why???) As long as North Carolina or Washington are at the front of the formation Illustrious suffers no damage (YAY) And heres how many barracuda hits you need on average:

Bismarck and Tirpitz= 4 bomb hits to one side (2 on average if supported by North Carolina class BBs)
Hutten and Berlichingen= 6 bomb hits to one side (4 on average if supported by North Carolina class BBs)

You are being biased towards your own experience. Take others’ experiences into account.

Other people can use the North Carolina class battleships effectively. It is even possible to survive many 15-inch shells, as long as your gunpowder isn’t hit.

Realistically, a shell hitting the radar mast can destroy the radar, but not cause a magazine explosion. They don’t store the gunpowder there.

      • Killerfish Games

Yes. Heavily damaged ships can now scuttle or explode on a hit.
This is to enable the easier sinking of heavily armoured capital ships that would often linger for a dozen turns or so requiring constant hits to finally sink.

This is intended. If a ship is too heavily damaged and no longer seaworthy it will be scuttled by the crew at the end of combat.

I think it’s a confused damage model, hitting things here damages things over there,They need to repwork the damage model them make it a bit tougher and it may be the best Allied battle ship besides lion

      Reply
      • IronMaiden666

Yeah Matt I agree with you Killerfish it was better before with the other way when we had to shoot many shells not juts 2-3 salvos like here and when we had to hit the hull to sink a ship not like now hitting the bridge and you sink the ship 3 turns later. Also if in the campaign someone’s fleet is sunk in 3-4 salvos every time, what can we do ?? They really need to work on that damage model. Put it like before it was good . My advice anyway. More fun if the battle is longer. I just say it because my Noth Carolina has been sunk with only AAA in red, all the rest in white no-damaged and no holes in the red hull

I agree, the old damage model seemed more realistic and adds an extra dimension of strategy to gameplay. When faced with multiple BBs, I would have to prioritize targets and often have to switch targets back and forth in the thick of battle because one enemy BBs damaged turrets will about to come online in the next turn. This nerve wrecking tension creates some of the best gameplay moments in the later campaign missions. Now with the current damage model, it suffices to focus all fire on a single target till it sinks (in about 2-3 turns) and rinse and repeat, a bit arcade-ish if you ask me.

aircraft carriers can detect subs because they have depth charge attacks

      Reply

Planes in the air (carrier or land based) will report the location of submerged contacts (at shallow or periscope depths).
They should be green and called “Submerged Contact” with no target solution data.
This enables planes to attack with aerial depth charges.

Maybe these Battleships would have served in the atlantic if completed(all ships over 30% completed before cancelation)

    Armament:
    12 × 16″/50 caliber Mark 2 guns (4×3)
    16 × 6″/53 caliber Mark 13 guns
    4 × 3″/50 caliber guns (dual purpose)
    4 × 6-pounder Hotchkiss (saluting guns)

Killerfish, is it possible you could put Iowa,Fletcher, and Gato class in the game since you already have the models and all you would have to do is add more detail and instead of making a new ship from scratch you could do that

        Reply

Here’s why I think Iowa might,MIGHT, be a good idea. The model for Iowa has already been made. So it wouldn’t be as hard just to make a whole new ship. This could go for the Gato class sub and Fletcher class destroyer. Also only put the Iowa in the game. Her other sisters never even sailed in the Atlantic on ww2

Iowa I would be ok with if it came under the condition of having to be unlocked like Lion and H-39,But no Gatos,Those were in the Atlantic for a couple of months(And only a few boats at that) and were transferred to where they were designed to operate,

And no Fletcher’s either..maybe some older classes like I’ve said already

Killerfish Games, is it possible that you could expand to wars aside from WW2? We could do WW1, Russo-Japanese War, the War of 1812 (must have USS Constitution and HMS Guerrire), American Civil War (with ironclads), Napoleonic Wars, Cold War (this will probably be a hard one to make, but the BotA mode can inspire a dynamic campaign in which you can play as the US and Soviet Union), and others.

Hey Killerfish I know I’ve asked this, but is it possible you could implement some of your models from PF in to AF? Just upgrade some of the old ships that were in PF and put the in AF. And maybe if you decide to add some U.S destroyers in to AF you could edit the Fletcher class destroyer into the Gleaves and Benson class destroyers. And maybe- only if you want to- could add the Gato class sub and older us subs but older ones would be better cause they saw more action in the Atlantic than the Gato class subs.

The models would need to be updated and it seems the Germans need more ships rather than the Allies.

      Reply
      • gm11

Agreed. Germany needs Graf Zeppelin to even out the odds. They can’t use airstrikes, unless they are in places where air cover from the Luftwaffe is available. Also, Graf Zeppelin was their only class of aircraft carriers to be launched, so it should be available, even at the start of BotA. There were also escort carriers that remained on paper, such as the Jade-class, and another conversion of a captured French cruiser, which was designated “II”.

Also, if the Allen M. Sumner class is implemented, would we need a newer variant of the Zerstorer to counter it? All the Zerstorers after the 1936B were either never completed, or remained as paper projects. I would suggest the Zerstorer 1942, and 1942C to counter the Allen M Sumner. The Gearings would be countered by the Type 1945, which was the final destroyer design of Nazi Germany, if they were ever to be added.

        • MattF4U-4

Graf Zeppelin wasn’t even completed yet at the start of the war,So don’t go saying “It should be available at the start of BoTA” when it still had maybe 7-8 months more work to be down,

Also,Germany really doesn’t need new ships to project airport, they just got Ridiculously Overpowered Submarines

          Allies have aircraft
          Germany has Better subs
Not exactly a balance but so what?

No reason to add all of these paper ships just for balance,Unless it’s WoWS….

The Wehrmacht needed Materials for Guns,Tanks, etc

            Plus her trials

            We don’t need her anyway

Keep in mind by The end of August in 1940 Germany has a glaring BB supremacy in terms of 1 particular class

Judging from the comments, it seems like there are others who might be interested in an “annihilation mode” in BotA.

    – set the usual tonnage numbers for winning to some large number so they never trigger and instead have the following conditions,

    – [WINNING CONDITION]: enemy roster is wiped out AND you still have active ships or still have enough renown to purchase ships from roster if all your active ships are sunk in the last battle.

    – [LOSING CONDITION]: there is one or more ships left on enemy roster AND all your active ships are sunk and you don’t have enough renown to purchase additional ships or your roster is wiped out.

I personally think this would be a great addition and shouldn’t be that hard to implement. Who else is with me? Killerfish, please consider this for the next update.

      • spike

That’s why it should be an option for players to select 🙂 … When I play BotA as the RN, it usually boils down to sinking u-boats for a good chunk of the time anyway since the German surface fleet is so small and gets wiped out in less than 2 years time.

But playing as Kriegsmarine, it’d be a shame if I cannot sink all those nice juicy surface ships of the RN, just saying! For players who have completed both BotA and the campaign, this would be a nice way to get some serious additional mileage out of AF.

Would it be a good idea to have French ships in the game? Some can be put, but not too much, so there are still more RN ships.

At least 2 or 3 battleships classes, Dunkerque, Richelieu, and Alsace (Alsace must be unlocked, because it was never built, was a bit faster than Bismarck, had torpedo tubes, and 12 15 inch guns).

At least 1 light cruiser class and 1 heavy cruiser class.

    A few destroyer classes.

    And French aircraft carrier Bèarn.

I wonder if there are any other day unlock able ships in AF…. They said in 1.08 there was the possibility of adding the H-44….. So does that mean H-44 couldn’t be in the game? Probably not but its cool to think that it might be there

      Reply
      • gm11

H-44 would be too overpowered. And since this is a turn based game, rate of fire doesn’t matter, because the guns can fire every single turn. There’s no other battleship with guns that big, except for possibly the Super Yamato, but this is game is set in the Atlantic, and the IJN was never in the Atlantic.

If Iowa and Montana get added, then H-41 should be added to even out the odds.

French and Italian ships would definitely be awesome. Especially the Italians. That way we have more Axis capital ships to blow up in BotA. 🙂

I think the Soviets might also be doable. They didn’t have that many ships, and it would open up a new front for the Germans to consider in BotA. I’d definitely like to see a couple Kirovs slugging it out with an Admiral Hipper. Perhaps even Sovetsky Soyuz as an unlockable Soviet battleship?

    • FlammeumDraco333

Yeah, North Carolina kinda disappointed me armor wise… Although her main armament is one of the best in the game (the only other ships that can compare are the Nelson (which is slow and has a derpy main battery layout), the Lion (which has to be unlocked), and the H39 (which also has to be unlocked).

North Carolina is special to me since I first toured her decks when I was only five… so obviously I freaked when I learned she was coming to Atlantic Fleet! She also dragged along her poor sister Washington… Good times, good times.

Though with all these new allied warships coming along, I wonder how the Axis will keep up? They only have 6 capital ships (2 Scharnhorsts, 2 Bismarcks, and 2 H39s), against the massive 29-33 ship Allied capital ship fleet (5 Revenges, 5 Queen Elizabeths, 2 Nelsons, 5 King George Vs, 2 North Carolinas, 2 Renowns, 1 Admiral (the majestic and beautiful Hood), and 7 carriers, and however many Lions there are).

If any new ships are coming, it’s hopefully gonna be Graf Zeppelin, the Italians, or maybe some German paper ship classes (O-class battlecruiser, P-class crusier). Maybe the other two Admiral Hippers will show up to play.

Which also brings up another question… how many Lion classes are there? I know there are two H39s, but I have no idea about the Lions… I know that 4 were ordered and named, but I am not sure how many are in game.

Firstly, I must start this comment by saying that I love your game Killerfish. Atlantic Fleet is probably the best mobile game I have ever bought, and is well worth even the expensive price (for a mobile game) you put up for it! My money was well spent!

Secondly, I must say I really do enjoy the game getting updated with new ships. Having 2 new ships with 9×16 inch guns for the allies is just going to be fun *rubs hands together,* as will those new German subs.

But since I’m seeing that you’re adding new ships, and listening to commenters, is there any chance we could see the Schleswig-Holstein Schlesien, and Emden in the game, as it would be nice for Germany to have a couple more large ships. Or maybe add in the Italian navy to help buff out the German fleet a bit. Notable ship classes missing from the game for the British include the S-class destroyers (1916), the S and T, U and V, and W, and Z class destroyers, the late C-class cruisers, the Danae class cruisers, the Emerald class cruisers, the river class frigates, and several British submarine classes.
Is there any initiative to implement any of these ships into the game?

H-39 is unlocked by winning BotA as Germany, or getting 3 stars in Axis campaign mission 50.

I’ve done some testing of North Carolina’s armor protection, and I have found some interesting information about her belt armor.

As we know, the in game stats list her belt as being 12″, and the belt of King George V is 14.7″. Now, logic would lead us to believe that KGV has better belt protection than North Carolina. However, this is clearly not the case.

I’m not sure exactly why, but when testing with the Lutzow, I have noticed that all of her 11″ shells will penetrate KGV’s belt and cause damage. However, VERY few 11″ shells could pen the belt of the North Carolina to cause damage, and as such, North Carolina survived nearly 5 times the punishment of the KGV.

I’m not sure if this is a bug or is deliberately added like this, but I would assume this is because Killerfish is compensating for North Carolina’s sloped armor belt or because of the superior armor quality of US Special Treated Steel. Either way, I am not complaining, as this means that North Carolina is the second most protected allied ships, only behind the mighty Lion.

Speaking of which, what is the armor thickness of the Lion? I’d assume only a little thicker than the KGV, as the Lion was literally just a slightly uparmored KGV with a longer length and better main armament, with a modified stern for improved speed. Just like how the H39 is a barely uparmored Bismarck with improved weaponry and longer length.

    • Killerfish Games

North Carolina (NC) has 12″ in the centre belt tapering to 6.6″ at the bow and stern.
KGV has 14.7″ belt tapering to 4″ at bow/stern. Also the NC has 5.5″ deck compared to the 5″ on KGV. So it might be that the KGV is taking more damage from hits towards the bow/stern (and likely deck depending on shell impact angle).
Lion has 15″ belt (tapering to 6″) and a 6″ deck.
My guess is that it is the deck armour difference accounting for NC’s improved survival over KGV.

Noticed a couple of odd bugs in BotA playing as Kriegsmarine.

    1. Sometimes a hit on an enemy ship, typically a destroyer since that’s the most numerous type of ships in the RN, there is no sign of the hit being registered (explosion/sound) and the camera freezes on that ship and the game does not advance to the next turn.

    2. Near the end of the war around 1944, my battleship groups would sometimes run into enemy ships but the screen doesn’t go to the typical encounter screen but it’s a cross of the usual map screen and the encounter screen. Essentially I see the left side of the usual encounter screen (my ships) and the background is still the overhead map (not grayed out) with no list of the enemy ships and no “Attack” button so I have to restart the app. I’ve only seen this with Bismarck class and H-39 class ships in my group so far.

    3. Not really a bug but I was curious. I noticed that the RN destroyers have amazing accuracy now (can’t remember if that was the case in earlier releases). Pretty much every single time my ships come into their guns’ range, they will register first salvo hits. I’ve been hit in the first salvo by all types of ships but they also miss quite a bit in the first salvo so it’s a bit of luck. However, the RN destroyers (of all types) will hit me 9/10 times pretty much in the opening salvo. Is this on purpose (better radar technology on the Allied side)? In the settings I have enemy gunnery set at “normal”.

      1. Need more info here. Can you reproduce this in a Custom Battle or identify the target ship class causing this problem.
      2. Will be very hard to reproduce. Looking into it.
      3. Does this only happen when you “enter” their gun range after several turns? Enemy ships track and build solutions against yours over multiple turns giving them a higher chance to hit once they open fire. For a battle where all ships start in gun range we’d not expect this behaviour.

      Reply
      • spike

Ok, that makes sense for the DD accuracy. Although what typically happens is they will approach my ships while laying smoke, which I thought meant that they couldn’t be tracking me since I couldn’t track targets while laying smoke. As soon as they come into range, they will drop smoke and the first salvo has very high accuracy compare to other classes of ships.

As for the first issue, it might be a memory issue since it usually happens during rainy/snowy weather and the game experiences slight lag rendering the weather conditions. I’ve sunk every type of RN destroyer during BotA, so probably not a class specific issue.

        Reply
      • spike

I think I’ve narrowed the 2nd bug down. I’ve encountered the bug again but with no BBs in my group which led me to believe it’s the enemy ships causing the problem. And indeed, the only class of RN ship that I haven’t encountered successfully in BotA is the North Carolina class. Given that this is the new class added, it’s highly likely that’s the culprit.

Killerfish, nice work on this game! And I just love it when developers add real content with updates. Also, good call on making the new German sub avail unrealistically early. 🙂

When “30 Player Ships” option is selected, does that allow 30 ships JUST for the human player side? Or for both sides? Might be worth a quick update of the Manual. Thanks!

FWIW, even on Hard the merchant tonnage sunk in events seems way high.
I’d love to see a future update with an “advanced” BoA campaign that is tweaked just a bit to be more realistic. Like number of German subs initially avail limited to 7-10, Ger limited to 20 ships total whilst Britian has 30, etc. I shouldn’t be able to force Britian out of the war before the battle of Britian is over. 😉

Overall one of the best games on iPad!

I take back my comment about “hard” tonnage. I spoke WAY too soon. Even after sinking what feels like the whole Royal Navy (91 warships), I’m just now in the spring of ’41 inching up to 300k tons.

I Think the whole broadside should be divided by 12-14 due to the fact that a lone airplane wouldn’t charge a whole ships worth of AAA

If you’re finding it hard, make sure it’s on easy settings (enemy gunnery normal etc.) then go out in the three biggest battleships you possess (Nelson, Rodney and Washington). Keep restarting until you spawn crossing the enemy’s ‘T’ then just duke it out, Surigao Strait-style.
Alternatively, replace the Washington with an Illustious-class carrier and use dive bombers to good effect – six good hits can sink a Hutten-class battleship.

i got 3 stars before the 1.09 update so i don’t know if this still works. anyway i brought a nelson and 2 UK submarines to battle, then restarted until my subs are spawned within range of enemy ships, having one directly on the path of enemy ships is a plus. I then used smoke on my nelson and maneuvered my subs firing positions until i found a killing solution. meanwhile just pray that the smoke works for nelson because it will be bearing the brunt of the shells of ALL enemy ships. if you think the nelson (or whatever ship) can now slug it out with the remaining ships get rid of the smoke and start returning fire, also surface the subs to provide diversionary targets to keep nelson alive as long as possible. Got me my 3 stars ^^

Great work on the game. The one disappointment I have with it is the small size of convoy battles. Having an escort force (sometimes) of four destroyers and a battleship or cruiser when the ’30 Ship’ option is applied, and have only five merchants to protect seems very odd. My feedback for the Devs would be to increase the maximum number of merchants (rather than all ships) which can participate in a battle and perhaps have convoys for the Germans in the Mediterranean and in Axis waters (Baltic, off of Norway, etc) which might give the Royal Navy submarines a purpose.

    I doubt this’ll get a good response, but I tried 😛

    • Killerfish Games

Great suggestion! But unfortunately battles are capped to 10 ships per side at this time.
German convoys would be great, but German merchant tonnage plays no role in the BotA game. Axis merchants can be found in the Med and along the coast of Norway, but sinking them earns no renown 🙁
Best use for the RN subs is to track the Axis surface groups and attempt to sink their capital ships without having to risk yours taking damage.

Killerfish, I just experienced a bug. My carrier Glorious engaged Bismarck, so I decided to get out of there. But as soon a pressed the smoke button, it switched to underwater camera and had a message saying “Glorious Sinking” thanks

    • Killerfish Games

Can this be reproduced in a Custom Battle?
Also had the Glorious taken significant damage? Since the game doesn’t use hit points (but buoyancy physics), it is possible for your damaged ship to be taking on water and begin sinking at any time, in this case perhaps after your movement phase. Could this explain what you saw?

      Reply
      • Nuclear moose

Well it’s hard to explain what I saw but I’ll try. Ok the there was no fire when I pressed smoke. No explosion,no fires on the water or oil, just as soon as I pressed smoke, it switched to the under water camera like when the ship disappears when it’s done sinking.

P.S( can you make big bodies of water visible on the BoTA map? Like the Great Lakes and the Great Lakes of Africa?)

Question for devs, could Pacific fleet ever be remade or updated to Atlantic fleet standards?

    With more ships,Fuso,North Carolina,Alaska,South Dakota,Yorktown Class,etc

Reasons I’m asking is because I recently redownloaded it,I haven’t played it in 6 months and am glad to be back but with as many ship classes or more then Atlantic fleet and all of that games features,It could be amazing

    Just wondering

It’d be awesome if they combined the two games to where you could go to both theaters. The allies could use the Panama Canal but the Axis would have to go around the world. However, it would be funny to see a Yamato Claass Battleship destroy a convoy off the coast off Britain

      Reply
      • gm11

I wanted Atlantic Fleet to be expanded into the Pacific, and renamed “World War II Fleet”, but they said that the Pacific will likely be a separate game.

You would also have to increase the max number of player ships if they combine both theatres, to about 40-60.

German ships can only be purchased from occupied European ports, while the Japanese ships can be purchased through Japan’s occupied ports only.

If they make a new Pacific Theatre naval warfare game, Montana and Super Yamato should be under to condition of being unlocked.

Wolves of the Atlantic is probably going to have Japanese ships. It was mentioned on its website.

My thoughts on the Battle of the Atlantic Campaign after the 2nd attempt as the British. I got as far as the the 3rd week in October of 1941 this time.. WARNING THIS IS BIT LONG:
1st off I want to say that this game is wonderful! It fills the void left by the Fighting Steel Project and Thunder at Sea. It shares a lot of their main features in the sense of it being VERY much like a table top naval miniatures . You have greatly warmed this old grognard’s heart! Now some observations that I hope you may consider for the next update especially for the Battle of the Atlantic. I can only speak from the British side since I will NEVER play German. These were countries not “factions” (sounds like mobs in a street war) with ideologies. Time has passed but that does not erase that What the Nazis stood for was pure evil. I’m old enough to know members of my family and friends of my family who were affected in one way or another. Just my .02. I do deeply love the history and respect how you have made a sincere effort in trying to capture this desperate time in WWII

Ok moving on (oh one more thing, I hate it when on youtube in the videos players refer to the ships as “boats”, if it is over 200-250 feet it is a SHIP. So says the USN and the RN) Now to my points about the Battle of the Atlantic Campaign. I do think it is ever so slightly (and I think unintentionally so) tilted to the Germans. It is understandable since the research for the game was based from book ” The German Fleet At War: 1939-45′ . Mr O’Hara is a very good scholar and researcher no problems at all with that book or what it says. I run miniature games and I do believe in making sure everyone has fun. I DO NOT want to slant the game ot the British. However if you really want to have a historically accurate game (and that is my impression hence why I love the game so far) then things should get harder starting in late 1940 and especially in early 1941 for the Germans. I would recommend looking at

Hitler’s U-Boat War, the Hunters 1939-1942 by Clay Blair, Random House

Hitler’s U- Boat War, the Hunted 1942-1945 by Clay Blair, Random House

As well as Black May by Michael Gannon which shows the evolution of US and British technology plus how the scientific community developed tactics that greatly changed the rate of success in killing U-boats that defeated the U-Boat menace. Further for a nice detailed overview I cannot recommend the website of the Royal Navy Museum enough. Their are two great sections on that site about the Battle of t he Atlantic
    http://www.naval-history.net /WW2CampaignsAtlanticBattles.htm#at
    http://www.naval-history.net/WW2CampaignsAtlanticDev.htm
The 2nd page gives a detailed look at the evolution of the convoy routes and tactics against the U-Boats. Many of my comments are generated by what that site has.

I hope these additional sources help. Now to my point (AT LAST! :>) ) It seems that bot the the players and the development team have been (understandably) focused on the details of the game play and ships themselves. All very well and good. I strongly urge the development team to take two or three steps back and look at the structure of the Battle of the Atlantic campaign itself. I do think the game is bit too focused on the “chrome” and needs to look more at how it is built over all. Here are my thoughts:

    1) The area involved in the game is actually North and South Atlantic, I am certainly not denying that both areas were very much involved in the U-boat war. However the “Battle of the Atlantic” mainly refers to to the part of the Atlantic between North America and Britain above the Equator. By spreading the game area to the bottom of South America and South Africa gives the German player HUGE hunting ground and it is impossible for the British to cover. I contend that this area is too big and to an extant does stack the deck the deck against the Royal Navy to a degree. Again I say that this is not intentional in any way. As a Royal Navy player I have two choices. Try to spread out to almost every where in penny packet groups that may be picked off or will be ineffective or focus on the
north half of the Atlantic and take my hits in the South Atlantic.
Either give the Royal navy more ships (Thunder at Sea used 50 + ships just doing the Northern convoys and the Murmansk runs alone) and (as the RN did historically )set up bases in the Caribbean and Gibraltar while carving up the Atlantic into Operational Commands with air support. That does make things a bit more complex. I would suggest that (add more ships) but focus on the North Atlantic the extra ships being from the both the Canadian and US Navies. You could do separate North Atlantic,South Atlantic and Mediterranean variant games with more detailed maps. That would allow greater detail. I have read in reviews the phrase “Whack-A-Mole” applied to the Game from the German side. It goes for the British as well. Focusing the playing area will
allow both sides to play a more operational game that can allow for larger groups to ships and submarines to fight over the primary convoy routes.. As the British if you try to do that you suffer because you are not spread all over the map near Brazil and Africa.

    2) As the Battle of the Atlantic Campaign is constituted now Great Britain is fighting in a vacuum all the way until Pearl Harbor and the US entry into the war. In the Battle of the Atlantic campaign it’s as if the US was strictly neutral until Dec 7th 1941.This is inaccurate. I agree that it should be like that until December1940. After Roosevelt (FDR) wins his 3rd term then he takes the US into a more aggressive stance against Germany . The neutrality patrols begin then intelligence sharing starts. Moreover in March of 1941 the Lend Lease Act is passed and the US merchant marine is mobilized to pour supplies to the British. In terms of the campaign four things should/could happen:

A)Most importantly the number of tons per month needing to be sunk to force Great Britain out of the war should go up to 400,000-450,000 because of the huge influx of war material and food coming from the US starting in week 3 of March 1941. This alone should cause the historical result of the Kriegsmarine pulling all the U-Boats out of the South Atlantic and into the main convoy routes in the North Atlantic. The monthly tonnage was way over 300,000 by mid to late 1940. so raising the tonnage would not be innacurate and gives the British player a chance to catch his breath,

B)The British player gets an increase in the number of ships he has available that would be US destroyers on the neutrality patrols starting Week 2 1941.This now makes it so that the British player does not have to cover the entire East coat of the US along with everything else. The neutrality patrols were a huge boost historically and allowed the RN to focus more on the Mid Atlantic and closer to the UK.

    C) There should be a boost in renown points for getting this far by percentage of what you have so far say 25 -50%

    D) there should be US air patrols when over US Eastern Seaboard thus giving air support to the RN when they are operating in that area also Week 2 1941.

Yes this would put more pressure on the German player BUT now they have to hustle and become more aggressive with larger wolfpacks focused on the North Atlantic and the Western Approaches. This I believe would increase the quality of the game. The Germans should get a wave of new U-Boats (type IX) starting in March of 1941. See http://www.uboat.net/technical/shipyards/ for how many U-boats were built and when. You see in 1941 a HUGE spike in production in 1941.

    3) In the late spring of 1940 start arming the Merchant ships with 4 inch guns.March 1941 the Merchant ships were armed with AAA. April of 1940 the merchantmen began to have catapult launched hurricanes and the HMS AUDACITY was introduced as the 1st escort carrier. So there should be merchant men CVE’s on line April 1940 onwards. Just throwing some idea out there that may be of interest.

    4) October 1940 the older US destroyers (from the swap for 50 DD’s for the use of a Caribbean base) come on line and should be available Week 2 in October of 1940. Likewise the Canadian Navy should be become more over a presence on it’s East coast and have destroyers and corvettes available.
    5) May 1941 should reflect the breaking of the Kriegsmarine enigma codes and improved Huff-Duff Radar and better sonar. This means the British player gets alerts as to where the U-boats are and the convoys are routed differently from turn to turn by the soft ware for the campaign. Also the sonar detection ranges get better allowing a submarine to be spotted by sonar from a further distance.

5A) PLEASE get rid of these ambush scenarios where U boat is just a few thousand yards from the ships. . that is VERY unrealistic. a group of destroyers would be pinging away like crazy and frankly most U-boat skippers do NOT want to pick a fight with a group of DD’s and the escort carrier loaded up with depth charge dumping airplanes!
5C either spread the ships out or let the player select how to place them. They are WAY WAY too close together. I spent the bulk of my time making fleet carriers have to jump and jook (that is a real word for you youngsters hee hee) their way out of torpedo salvos like DD’s!!

    6) Lastly the proportion of Uboats operational should NOT be based on the over all number that were built or that were in the fleet. It feels like you are up against dozens if not hundreds of U boats per turn. I know that is an exaggeration. From the royal navy Museaum web site: “Towards the end of the month, “U-122” and “U-102” were lost off the North Channel separating Northern Ireland from Scotland, possibly on mines according to German sources. It was in this area and throughout the North Western Approaches to the British Isles that such U-boat commanders as Endras, Kretschmer, Prien and Schepke enjoyed the ‘Happy Time’ until early 1941. U-boat strength was no greater than at the beginning of the war, and there were never more than 15 boats on patrol out of the 25 operational; the rest were training or on trials. Yet from now until the end of December 1940 they accounted for most of the 315 ships of 1,659,000 tons lost in the Atlantic.”

So it should not be the case that the German AI or the German player gets to unleash 2 dozen U boats all over the ocean until spring 1941 However in this last try at the campaign I sunk 184 U-boats for an average of about 15 U-Boats per month Historically that would of crippled the Kriegsmarine. I am saying that when the British player does sink a decent number of U-boats there should be an impact that would reduce the number of U-boats that are on patrol the next turn and if enough are sunk cause the Kriegsmarine to have to build more U-Boats and regroup for a couple of weeks or so. It seemed like no mater how many I sunk the U-boats just kept coming! I think the number of U-Boats available per turn should be restricted with gradual increases until spring 1941 when the entire naval production when into U-boats as I mentioned before.

Ok that should be more than enough for you and your team to chew on. I look forward to your thoughts and the thoughts of my fellow gamers.

    Friendly Regards,
    Karl

Some of your ideas are good

i sort of like the renown percentage increase

As Germany, maybe it could I’m implemented but I actually would love it as the U,K,as Germany, there’s so many womderful British surface ships to sink, many worth more than my entire force of type IX U-Boats,and they’re fairly commonly encountered

But as England there’s not much worth a ton of renown to sink
      Germany has a total of
      4 Battleships
      6 Heavy cruisers,
Idk the exact number but like,7 or 8 light cruisers
And there’s maybe a total of 35 or 36 German destroyers

All of this can be sunk within 2 years time, worth a lot,but due to so many U-Boats around I commonly am losing destroyers,And not always making enough renown back ,(4 Expensive tribal class destroyers lost in summer of 1940)

Maybe increasing U-Boat Renown earned when sinking them

Now,as for your Suggestion Of increasing tonnage needed to be sunk by the U-Boats,I’m fine with it increasing in late 1940(and I mean like the last 2 months) as mid 1940,it would be near impossible to win as Germany,(I just start making it to 300’000 By then)

The 50 US destroyers aren’t modeled in game,so they can’t be added any time soon

As for making Allied ASW capabilities grow and making it harder on U-Boats,Maybe,lose lots of U-Boats as it is(I’ve lost many U-Boats around England, always have to keep at least 3,not many U-Boats deployed there make it out and require constant replacement),And Surface ships are always necessary,

Now as for your last suggestion which was pretty much Historical commission dates for U-Boats,Maybe,Germany didn’t have many of the boats in the classes currently in game when the war broke out and that would severely limit Mainly German players in BoTA(Like me)

Also U.S merchants actually do begin to show up before their entry into the war just they don’t add to the amount needed to be sunk, but they appear eventually, just look at flags throughout the convoys
